Actor Ryan Thomas, 35, and his fiancée Lucy Mecklenburgh, 28, have had an exciting 2019 – from getting engaged in Italy to Lucy expecting their first child together, the couple really do have plenty to look forward to in the future.
Since meeting in 2017, the couple have gone from strength to strength, despite facing personal difficulties, including Ryan being accused by actress Roxanne Pallett, 36, of “punching” her – something she later apologised for.
Fast becoming a favourite celebrity couple, here’s everything you need to know about Lucy and Ryan’s relationship, from wedding plans to Ryan’s stint in the Celebrity Big Brother house.
Long before they confirmed they were an item, fans became suspicious of the gorgeous twosome. It began in May 2017 when sources revealed the pair only had eyes for each other on Celebrity Island With Bear Grylls.
A source told the Daily Star at the time: “There’s definitely a mutual attraction which is getting everyone excited.”
Ryan and Lucy added fuel to the fire when they posted from their hotel room in Panama in June 2017.
On the trip, the former TOWIE star stripped off for a black and white shot, posing nude on the edge of a bathtub, overlooking gorgeous Panama. And the snap obviously got everyone talking.
While Lucy wrote: “What a view #panama #bath #viewgoals #booty,” fans focused on something else in the suggestive image.
They quickly noticed Ryan had been sharing pictures of a similar hotel room on his own account, and commented: “Take it you’re with @ryanthomas84 given he’s in Panama also????”
Ryan and Lucy go public with their romance
After making their first public appearance together at Wimbledon, Lydia Bright’s best pal later confirmed they were official on her social media.
Posting on her Instagram story, the gorgeous Lucy shared a snap of her holding hands with Ryan in a tight embrace.
And days later while speaking to Fabulous magazine she said: “It’s no secret that we’ve been on holiday together, and I’ve had a really lovely time. Life’s good. It’s really early days. If it’s OK with you, I’d like to leave it at that.”
Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls airs
Bear Grylls’ Celebrity Island aired in August 2017 and from the first episode viewers saw the gorgeous couple’s romance blossom.
In fact, in the promo for the second episode we saw the stranded duo share their first kiss.
Meanwhile, as the show aired, Lucy jetted off to Italy with her beau and his brother Scott Thomas to attend a wedding in Lake Como.
Ryan introduces Lucy to his daughter Scarlett
Months after making things official, Ryan took the next step to prove how much his fitness fanatic girlfriend means to him by introducing Lucy to his now-ten-year-old daughter Scarlett, whom he shares with ex Tina O’Brien.
The trio enjoyed a showing of the Robin Williams classic Mrs Doubtfire, with each taking to Instagram to share a snap.
Alongside the adorable photo, the actor wrote: “How did you spend your Sunday? #RobinWilliamsLegend.”
Lucy shared a similar caption alongside several photos on her Instagram story, writing: “It has to be in my top 5! Robin Williams is just an absolute legend! What a talented man.”
Lucy raised the break-up alarms in October 2017 when she shared a picture of a frog and wrote: “I seem to attract frogs/toads.”
But it seems Lucy might have been talking more literally, as she jetted off to Melbourne to meet up with her actor boyfriend to support him in his new role in Neighbours just weeks later. And Lucy and Ryan shared videos and pictures while they partied together in the Australian city.
Sources weighed in on Ryan’s intentions to get down on one knee in March 2018. Speaking to The Sun, a source said: “He has spent a lot of time, trouble and cash. When a man buys a diamond ring for his girlfriend, it usually means one thing — marriage.”
However, source close to the couple told OK! Online that while the pair are “very happy” they have no plans to get engaged just yet.
“Ryan and Lucy are very happy together – they are a solid couple, but they’re not planning on getting married just yet,” they said.
More rumours of a break up
More split rumours hit the couple in June 2018, just a few weeks after they sparked engagement speculation.
In the early months, the duo were reported to have had an “explosive row” putting them at breaking point.
A source told The Sun at the time: “It’s a real shock. They had a massive row this week and called it quits on the spot, which will come as a massive surprise to everyone who knows them because they’ve seemed so loved-up.
“Their friends hope it might still work out again in the future, but who knows if that will be possible.”
However, just a day later Ryan appeared to shut down the speculation. The actor took to social media just hours after rumours surfaced to share a picture of his other half.
Posing for an Instagram story to his followers, Lucy sat on top of a jeep alongside his former Corrie co-star Brooke Vincent, beaming in a throwback shot. Shutting shown any reports he was no longer dating Lucy, Ryan wrote: “Can’t wait for the next adventure with these two lunatics!”
Just before Ryan was set to enter the Celebrity Big Brother House, the couple opened up about their relationship for the first time to OK! magazine and even revealed their plans to get married.
The former Coronation Street actor said: “We’ll have a massive wedding. It would be huge and one big party. It would be bigger than my brother Adam’s!”
He also revealed how he instantly knew Lucy was special, telling her he loved her almost immediately.
Ryan added: “I’m a softie and I wouldn’t have her around my daughter unless I knew she was going to be around for a very long time. I said the love word straight away. It gets used very frequently in my life – I’ll tell my mates I love them daily. Lucy isn’t as open as I am.”
The reality TV hunk also said he “had his eye on her for about three years”.
Ryan’s Celebrity Big Brother stint
Ryan’s time in the CBB house in 2018 wasn’t short of drama after an incident with Emmerdale’s Roxanne Pallett led to her claiming he had “punched” her.
Lucy was quick to vocalise her support for her beau with several social media posts.
“It’s been the hardest couple of days. Watching the person you love go through hell. It’s been extremely upsetting and uncomfortable to watch,” Lucy said.
“I still can’t imagine how painful this all must have been for him, I really can’t. I’m trying not to to be honest as every time I do I burst into tears and want to get into my car to drive to Elstree to get him out!! But finally it’s over. Thank you for all the kind supportive messages u have sent me and Ryan’s family. P.S Karma,” Lucy said when Roxanne quit the show.
Ryan later went on to win that series of Celebrity Big Brother.
Ryan and Lucy get engaged
On a romantic trip to Italy in June 2019 Ryan asked Lucy to marry him.
Sharing the exciting news with her 1.5million followers, Lucy posted a photo of her and Ryan lovingly touching noses while she puts her hand on his face, showing off her huge rock, Lucy broke the news by telling fans in the caption: “I SAID YES”.
In an exclusive interview with OK! magazine about their engagement, Ryan revealed Lucy had a rather odd reaction to him popping the question. He said: “Lucy kept me waiting before she said yes… then she threw up!”
During their engagement interview the couple revealed plans to start a family together, despite Ryan previously saying he wouldn’t have any more children.
Lucy exclusively told OK! magazine: “At the start of our relationship, Ryan told me that he couldn’t see himself having any more children.
“It wasn’t something I pushed at the time because I wasn’t ready to have kids and I assumed that he would change his mind one day.
“It’s something we’ve since had to have an adult conversation about and we’ve agreed we will try for children when the time is right.”
Ryan added: “I definitely want children with Lucy but I don’t think it’ll happen for a few years.”
Lucy announces pregnancy
But, it seems the pair didn’t have to wait long until starting their family together, as on Saturday 26 August 2019 Lucy posted a photo on her Instagram, revealing she was pregnant with the couple’s first child.
Former TOWIE beauty Lucy posted a photo of her and Ryan holding a baby grow while she clutches her bump.
Confirming the exciting news in her caption, Lucy said: “Best birthday present I’ve ever had,” with a baby emoji and added: “Love you,” while tagging her beau Ryan.
Lucy’s BFF Lydia, 29, was one of the first celeb friends to comment on the snap with messages of congratulations. She said: “Wohooooooooo, we can finally scream it from the roof tops. Can’t wait for our babies to be best friends!”
Lydia, who is also pregnant with her first child, later revealed the besties are “five days apart” in their pregnancies. Sharing an adorable photo of the two holding their bumps on her Instagram, Lydia wrote alongside the photo: “We have experienced a lot together but I have a feeling this is going to be our favourite adventure. #5DaysApart #DoubleTrouble.”
