Do you buy “the nicest guy in Hollywood” as Mister Rogers?
The first trailer for “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” the new Fred Rogers biopic, premiered Monday, and it features two-time Academy Award winner Tom Hanks in full cardigan and loafer mode.
“I think the best thing we can do is let people know each one of them is precious,” Hanks says in the clip, nailing the beloved PBS children’s show personality‘s signature halting cadence.
The plot revolves around the beloved “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” host’s developing friendship with Esquire journalist Lloyd Vogel (Matthew Rhys of “The Americans”),” IndieWire reports.
The cynical scribe begrudgingly tackles the magazine assignment — only to find his world view gradually sweetening thanks to Rogers’ sunny outlook on life.
Indie filmmaker Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) directs her first major studio feature from a script by Micah Fitzerman-Blue (“Transparent”) and Noah Harpster (“Maleficent: Mistress of Evil”).
The Sony/TriStar Pictures production also features “This is Us” star Susan Kelechi Watson as Vogel’s wife, with supporting players including Oscar winner Chris Cooper (“American Beauty”), Enrico Colantoni (“Veronica Mars”), Maryann Plunkett (“House of Cards”) and Tony nominee Tammy Blanchard (“Gypsy”).
The film is the second big screener based on Rogers’ life. He also inspired the acclaimed 2018 documentary “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.”
The film marks Hanks’ second biopic of the year — he’s also filming Baz Lurhmann’s upcoming Elvis Presley opposite Austin Butler as the king. He co-stars as the legendary singer’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, who infamously dictated every aspect of Presley’s life.
“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” is set to hit theaters nationwide on Thanksgiving day, November 28.
