Jonathan Groff to lead ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ revival

And it goes uptown!

“Little Shop of Horrors,” the proudly weird sci-fi musical comedy with music by Alan Menken and book and lyrics by Howard Ashman, is getting its first proper off-Broadway revival steps from Times Square.

Beginning Sept. 17 at the Westside Theatre on 43rd Street, the production will star Jonathan Groff (“Spring Awakening,” “Hamilton”) as flower shop employee Seymour, Tammy Blanchard (“Gypsy”) as his belting coworker Audrey and Christian Borle (“Something Rotten”) as her dentist boyfriend, Orin.

The show — which premiered off-Broadway in 1982 — is about an also-ran whose life is changed when he acquires a blood-eating houseplant. It last played New York in a much-admired Encores concert staging starring Jake Gyllenhaal and original Audrey Ellen Green at City Center in 2015.

The most recent major production in the city was at the August Wilson Theatre (then called the Virginia) on Broadway in 2003. It ran 372 performances and its platelet-lovin’ creature was designed by Jim Henson.

This revival will be directed by Michael Mayer (“Hedwig and the Angry Inch”), and is scheduled to run through Nov. 24. Opening night is Oct. 17.
