Disney names director for ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’

Disney has reportedly pegged Kari Skogland — of “The Handmaid’s Tale” — to direct its much-anticipated Marvel mini-series, “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

The Emmy-nominated director will be at the helm for all 6 parts of the Disney+ show, which is scheduled to air in August 2020, according to Deadline.

Sources told the website that actors Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, who played Falcon and Winter Soldier in the MCU, will be starring — and “Captain America: Civil War”‘s Daniel Bruhl and Emily Van Camp are also in talks to join.

Bruhl portrayed the Marvel villain Zemo in “Civil War” and Camp played Sharon Carter, grand-niece of Captain America’s love interest, Peggy Carter.

It’s unclear whether the passing of Cap’s shield to Falcon — aka Sam Wilson — in “Avengers: Endgame” will be involved in the Winter Soldier story-line. Disney would not comment when asked by Deadline.

In addition to the Handmaid’s Tale, Skogland has been nominated — and awarded — for her work on the indie film “Fifty Dead Men Walking,” starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Jim Sturgess.

She’s directed a number of episodes for hit shows such as “Vikings,” “Boardwalk Empire,” “Penny Dreadful,” “The Americans” and “The Walking Dead.”

Marvel fans were pumped about the hire.

“KARI SKOGLAND IS INCREDIBLE,” wrote one Twitter user. “The Next World is one of the best directed episodes of @WalkingDead_AMC and I have loved her work for ages. I’m so glad this show is in good hands.”

Another person said, “Why stop at 6? I need a full 22 episode season.”
