Good Morning Britain viewers were left divided after Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid debated whether men can be labelled as “mothers”.
ITV viewers took to Twitter as Piers Morgan passionately argued with journalist Amy Nickell that men “couldn’t mother a child” as she revealed her four year old child buys her a Father’s Day card reading: “You’re a mummy and a daddy to me”.
Piers said: “A man can’t, for example, breastfeed his kids. He can pretend to be a mother all he likes but he can’t breastfeed his child. There are limitations to ‘motherhood’.”
Amy then argued: “Would you say to a mother that couldn’t breastfeed that they aren’t a mother?” Before Piers responded: “No. I’m saying it’s one of the many things only a woman can do.”
Broadcaster Amy then revealed her son thinks she’s both “mummy and daddy” and accused Piers of gender stereotyping.
One fan tweeted: “This c**p is disrespectful to good fathers. Just because a father is nurturing and loving to their child they have to be compared to a female? What a load of tosh. The worlds gone mad.”
A second added: “Dear God, Piers. Even when he’s right he manages to come across wrong. Stop shouting over people.”
A third viewer tweeted: “We can say parents do both roles, we can say a mother has had to father a child too, we can say a father has had to mother a child too. But a man can’t mother like a woman, and a woman can’t father like a man!”
While another wrote: “Can men be a mother? What a load of rubbish. Two roles, none of any more important than each other. Both very important roles for a child. Why cant everyone calm down, this world is to much.”
Another viewer tweeted: “Surely by saying that mothers and fathers have very different skill sets, that is just stereotyping to its highest level? If I were to teach my daughter how to change a car tyre would that mean I was fathering her? No, it’s called being a parent! I’m still her mum!”
One viewer added: “I get a card & pressie on fathers day cos I brought my kids up on my own but they don’t call me their dad, I’m their mum, because I’m female.”
Others took the guests side, with one tweeting: “Can men be mothers… I can see both views from these women but I do agree a man CAN mother a child, if there’s not a mother around plenty men do a brilliant job of being both parents #gmb @piersmorgan needs to stop being such an ignorant ‘manly man’.”
