Matthew Wolfenden and wife Charley Webb have revealed they’re expecting their third child together after marrying last February in a surprise wedding ceremony.
The couple, who had been engaged for nine years, fooled guests by asking them to attend a birthday party for the Debbie Dingle actress.
The Emmerdale stars exclusively opened up about their wedding to OK! magazine, with the mum of two revealing: “That moment when we announced what we were doing and seeing everybody’s reaction is the best moment of my life.”
From meeting on the ITV soap to their children and split in 2013, here’s what you need to know about the newlyweds’ relationship:
When and how did Charley and Matthew meet?
The now-husband and wife met on ITV soap Emmerdale.
Charley joined the Yorkshire Dales in 2002 when she was a teenager, taking on the role of Debbie Dingle and Matthew, now age 37, joined the soap in 2006 as David Metclaffe. The duo began dating not long after in 2007.
When did they get engaged?
The twosome got engaged in 2009 after Matthew popped the question on Christmas Day, two years after they started dating.
How many children do they have?
The duo are parents of two sons, Buster and Bowie, with their third child on its way.
The soap stars revealed the exciting news they were expecting another child alongside an adorable photo with their son holding up a board which read: “Buster, Bowie and…”
The Debbie Dingle actress, 30, captioned the shot simply with: “#Number3.”
Previously chatting to OK! magazine, Charley revealed their plans for a third child: “We definitely want another baby. I’m happy to have all boys. I hate it when people ask if I’m desperate for a girl. I think people expect a woman to want a girl.”
Matthew said he’d be happy for his sons to have a baby sister: “We’ll start thinking about having another baby next year . We’d love a girl but I think we’re destined to have a house full of boys. I want us to have a girl!”
Charley added: “I wouldn’t put a time on it, but we want to have another child. I always wanted Bowie to be about two and a half when we had another one.”
When did they get married? Where was their wedding?
Inviting 100 guests to Ripley Castle near Harrogate on February 10, 2018, the duo told guests they would be attending a birthday bash for Charley’s 30th.
Little did they know the engaged pair would finally be exchanging vows, and guests like Charley’s brother Jamie Lomas had to step into his wedding role with no notice.
Speaking to OK! magazine about the big day, Charley said: “This way we got to do it totally the way we wanted – it wasn’t traditional, we didn’t have a sit-down meal and there weren’t loads of speeches.
“Someone once told me their friend had a surprise wedding and it stuck in my mind.”
Matthew added: “We couldn’t have had a better response. People just screamed for about ten minutes! It’s funny to think that our guests thought they were coming to Charley’s 30th party – then we told them it was our wedding!”
The married couple made sure their sons were involved in the big day too, as Matthew revealed: “We did the sand-blending ritual to symbolise the unity of the family with the kids.
“Bowie running up and down the aisle and interrupting made it more special. It wasn’t the most traditional wedding, but we wanted it to be different.”
When and why did Matthew and Charley split?
The now-married couple had a brief split in 2013 after five years together, with a representative confirming at the time: “Charley Webb and Matthew Wolfenden have today confirmed that they have separated.
“They will remain friends and are focusing on their little boy.”
Throughout their breakup, the pair kept their relationship amicable and after rekindling their romance in 2015, Matt told the Daily Record at the time: “It was never a permanent split, we just needed some time apart.
Sometimes life just gets on top of you. We had a terrible two-year-old at the time and needed time to look at what we had but it was the best thing we could have done.
“Now I’m maybe more thoughtful, more romantic.”
