Pantone just announced its 2019 color of the year: coral. “Living Coral,” to be precise, which has golden undertones.
The hue “energizes and enlivens with a softer edge,” according to the Instagram post proclaiming the selection, which was revealed in an event at Art Basel in Miami. “Sociable and spirited, [it] welcomes and encourages lighthearted activity.”
More richly saturated than trendy millennial pink, the peachy pick follows 2018’s Ultraviolet (not purple!) and 2017’s vibrant, tropical Greenery.
Coral is indubitably cheery.
Pantone, which has a proprietary labeling and categorization system for colors, says that it “symbolizes our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits.”
It joins the other 2019 colors of the year unveiled so far: Benjamin Moore’s subtle Metropolitan Gray, Sherwin-Williams’ dusky red Cavern Clay and Behr’s muted Blueprint.
While Pantone and the paint companies aim to capture the zeitgiest with their choices, it’s really fashion designers, decorators, product makers and others who seize upon their color forecasts to inform and inspire their own work.
