Strictly Come Dancing favourite Aston Merrygold jokingly confessed he’s “fuming” at BBC producers over a huge show change for 2018.
The JLS singer, who competed with professional Janette Manrara 12 months ago, left under a cloud of controversy when he was booted out ahead of the final in a judges decision many deemed unfair.
Dad of one Aston will nevertheless return to the Strictly stage this Christmas, and exclusively told OK! online he would be tackling a routine he never got chance to in his initial bid for the Glitter Ball trophy.
The 31 year old was first to tell us he had been left irate at the format shake-up, which now allows the pairings to plump for a Couples Choice routine.
Those who have relished the surprise twist include Steps singer Faye Tozer, who plumped for a Halloween themed musical theatre routine and Paralympian Lauren Steadman, who dazzled in her contemporary routine with AJ Pritchard.
Yet Aston told how he is gutted not to have been able to take stab and said of the new series: “I’ve been on tour so I haven’t been able to watch it much, but I’ve seen a few bits.
“But when I switched on I was fuming – what is this couples choice? I didn’t get chance to do it.
“If I got a couples choice last year that would have been a different story.
“The ballroom and Latin world is very traditional and very technical in some aspects and it shouldn’t be changed, but dance is evolving, everything has to change at some point and dance is doing unbelievable things so it’s only right to take that leap – I think it’s a good thing.”
Meanwhile Aston, who is married to choreographer Sarah, teased a few details of his festive routine for his Strictly comeback, confirming he has been allocated his partner.
He said: “We started rehearsing this week, which is great and it’s nice to be back in the rehearsal room and even nicer to be doing it in my own studio, in Vauxhall.
“It is one [a routine] that I didn’t get to do on the show and it is definitely a treat for me.”
